If I need to archive my work in a repository, I am glad to have it in a human-readable, non-propriety format, that is not dependent on ongoing support from a commercial company. If I need to get my data into a new format to use with proprietary software, TEI is easily reconfigurable into alternate formats while leaving the TEI itself intact for future use.
